Paid campaigns

Connect paid campaigns to a useful sales response.

A relevant advertisement is the start of a buyer journey. Its landing page, enquiry process and sales handover need to carry the same promise. Use this brief to connect those steps, agree who handles the work and decide what the results should tell you.

In this guide

Choose the question the campaign will examine

Specify the audience, the problem you can help with and the action a person can reasonably take after seeing the advertisement. “Generate leads” leaves room for very different enquiries. “Invite warehouse operators with recurring staffing gaps to discuss the roles and locations they need covered” gives the campaign and receiving team a more useful boundary.

Use the actual customer segment and positioning to choose the promise. A plausible sector label does not establish a current need, available budget or buying project. Make clear which of those questions the response process will explore.

Define the review decision before setting the budget: continue the current approach, revise the audience or promise, investigate the enquiry process, or stop. Agree a spending limit, review points and who may change them. Media spend, platform access, production work and ongoing operation should be explicit parts of the commercial scope.

Check prospecting and retargeting audiences separately

Prospecting introduces the proposition to an audience selected through available targeting methods. Record why those attributes are useful proxies for the intended reader and where they are imprecise. A job title or industry category should not be treated as a verified responsibility or requirement.

Retargeting uses an earlier interaction or audience relationship to select people for further advertising. Record what interaction qualifies, when it occurred, which information is used and when membership should expire. A visit to a guide can justify relevance to the subject without showing that the person is ready for a sales approach.

A platform allowing an audience upload or tracking tag does not establish permission for your particular use. Check the applicable jurisdictions, collection method, notices, consent where required, provider terms and downstream sharing. The ICO’s UK online-advertising guidance explains consent requirements for advertising-related storage and access technologies. It is UK guidance, not a universal rule for every campaign market.

Write one campaign brief from advertisement to enquiry

A staffing business is testing interest in support for recurring warehouse roles in two regions it serves. The campaign invites employers to discuss their requirements. Its brief connects that promise to targeting, the landing page and the receiving sales team.

Audience

Decision for this campaign
Employers with relevant warehouse operations in the two supported regions
Check before activation
Verify the targeting options and exclude locations the team cannot serve

Promise

Decision for this campaign
Discuss recurring roles, shifts and the coverage problem
Check before activation
Ad and landing page retain the delivery limits and avoid placement guarantees

Landing page

Decision for this campaign
Explain the staffing work and ask about location, role and timing
Check before activation
The page is readable on mobile and the enquiry keeps the person’s own requirements

Retargeting

Decision for this campaign
Consider only an approved, permitted audience from relevant prior interactions
Check before activation
Confirm collection, audience rules, expiry and suppression before enabling it

Existing relationships

Decision for this campaign
Review customers and accounts already in active discussions separately
Check before activation
Account owners agree whether the campaign fits the current conversation

Response and measurement

Decision for this campaign
Send requests to a named reviewer with campaign context
Check before activation
Test receipt, absence cover and assessment; distinguish enquiries from accepted opportunities

The plan may proceed with prospecting and leave retargeting out. An incomplete permission or collection design is a reason to exclude that audience, not a reason to assume the website’s existing settings cover it.

An employer asking about an unsupported location still needs a clear response. Keep the reason visible in the review record; do not count every form completion as a suitable commercial opportunity merely because it arrived through a paid campaign.

Make the landing page keep the promise

Read the advertisement and landing page together. The page should explain the named task, show relevant evidence or a concrete method, retain material limitations and make the next step clear. Make the advertised offer easy to find instead of leaving the reader to search a broad service catalogue.

Ask only for information that helps handle the request at this stage. For the staffing example, role, location and timing may be useful, while a long procurement questionnaire may be premature. Give the person space to explain an unusual requirement. The inbound qualification guide describes the assessment that follows.

Test errors and uncertain delivery as carefully as the successful form. A button reacting to a click is immediate feedback; a receipt message should reflect the actual delivery state. The team needs a way to recover requests whose delivery is uncertain, without asking visitors to submit them again.

Join the campaign to the receiving team’s work

Preserve useful campaign context with the enquiry: the promise, relevant page and the person’s submitted request. Link known account history where it can be matched responsibly. The receiving person should understand what was offered and which questions remain open.

Lead routing determines the initial owner and the exceptions. Qualification determines whether the request fits the business and what next step has actually been agreed. Changing a score or assigning a salesperson does not answer those questions.

Return review reasons to the campaign owner. Unsupported locations, different service expectations or repeated confusion about the next step can reveal a targeting or message problem. Share only the information needed to improve the campaign, with appropriate access to the underlying enquiry details.

Keep delivery, qualification and commercial outcomes separate

Record what the platform delivered and spent, what the landing page received, which enquiries the team reviewed and what happened next. For each measure, state the period and what is being counted or used as the comparison base. A cost per enquiry and a cost per accepted opportunity answer different questions.

A reported conversion can reflect an attribution rule rather than an additional outcome caused by the advertisement. Google’s Conversion Lift explanation describes controlled comparisons between exposed and unexposed groups. Such studies have availability and design requirements; a small campaign should not claim causal lift from a few attributed enquiries.

When evidence is sparse, inspect the actual enquiry records and the response process. The measurement guide helps make a bounded decision without claiming certainty the data cannot support. Keep website activity separate from what a person has explicitly told you.

Walk one proposed advertisement through the whole process

Choose one ad, its intended audience and the page it opens. Write the likely reader question, the form response, the receiving owner and the qualification decision. Then try an existing customer, an unsupported request, a withheld advertising-consent choice and an absent owner.

Mark each assumption in the plan. Decide which questions must be resolved before activation and which the campaign can investigate. Record who approves the creative, audience, tracking, spend and later changes.

Paid promotion is a channel to agree within a Build campaign. Scope the content, landing page, media spend, operation and response responsibilities together. If your team first needs research or a campaign plan to use itself, commission that independently through Plan. The content planning guide helps identify answers the audience needs before enquiring.

Where does your paid campaign lose the thread?

We can examine the audience, message, landing page and enquiry handover together. Agree the campaign work needed, including who operates it and how enquiries reach your sales team.
